The „Étude sur le mouvement d’art décoratif en Allemagne” from 1912 was the first own publication by Le Corbusier. The young architect analyses the German decorative art movement and its protagonists in it on a lucid way, such as Peter Behrens, who he worked for in 1910/11. The text is one of the most important contemporary documents about the emerging of modern design in Germany and it simultaneously offers completely new cognitions about the biographic development of Le Corbusier.
This publication is the first translation of the original text of the “Étude” in English. A detailed commentary with images explains the text in the context of decorative arts, politics and architecture before the First World War. It explains how European contemporary history and the biography of the maybe most important architect of the 20th century are connected on a fascinating way in the “Étude”.
